I love these updates, its like receiving a chatty email from a friend telling you their news.
I don't understand the face hairs, I get one on my cheek that appears at 2cm long - it doesn't grow, it just turns up and I don't notice it until I'm sat in a meeting and feel it sticking out of my face. I then spend the rest of the day hugely self conscious thinking everyone is looking at it! Time to start keeping tweezers at work I think.
I now have tweezers in my handbag for just this reason! Isn't it mad how they appear out of nowhere though?! I read a woman describe it as being like The Fly - that Jeff Goldblum film - when insect hairs start appearing on him. Glad you like the updates, Julie. Thanks for taking the time to tell me.
Undirected irritability! It's as Nina says in her comment; all those hormones that lead women to put others first disappear. Then you're left feeling that you really should come first in your own life, but you're out of practice and others are surprised when you start saying shocking things such as "No" 😄
I absolutely love your writing Marianne, you always make me laugh, wince with recognition and feel better about myself, I wish I could share this on Instagram but can’t work out how to. Have downloaded the substack app specifically to let you know anyway, you are so brilliant!
I so appreciate that, Antonia! Thanks for telling me you like my writing, it means a lot and for going to the trouble of downloading the app. I hope you are well and having a nice Summer.
I loved this newsletter. I am a middle-aged angry woman. I am also a middle-aged hairless woman but that's due to chemo; would not recommend 😄. I haven't bought new clothes for years and no-one seems to care - it helps that I was a scruff before and am still a scruff...🤣
Am I allowed to share middle-aged reading recommendations here? Both "Hags" and "Hagitude" are brilliant. Embrace it!
I have heard of both of them, will order now. Thank you. I love that all this stuff is being spoken about more. I'm sorry to hear about the chemo - hope it did what it needed to? Interesting about the anger - I don't think I've had much of that yet. How does your anger show up?
Chuckled my way through this instalment of your news letter. I love that you are a middle aged woke woman. I am a middle aged angry woman. The rage is like nothing I’ve experienced before, but the patriarchy is responsible for it. Obvs. Also snap on the chin hairs 🤣
Apparently there is power in the rage - it's a righteous rage that comes from seeing clearly and no longer have the hormones or the interest to prioritise other people all the time.
